Zapp completed 3G coverage in 15 cities

Zapp today announced that it completed the 2.100 Mhz network roll out in fifteen of the nineteen cities that will benefit from 3G coverage by end of June 2008: Brasov, Braila, Sibiu, Arad, Bacau, Satu Mare, Baia Mare, Constanta, Craiova, Ploiesti, Targu Mures, Cluj Napoca, Timisoara, Galati and Pitesti.

Zapp won a licence for 3G services in 2006 and obligations requires that by June 30th 2008 the operator has to deploy a 2.100 Mhz network in the following metropolitan areas in: Bucuresti, Timisoara, Brasov, Constanta, Cluj, Iasi, Sibiu, Tg Mures, Braila, Arad, Galati, Pitesti, Ploiesti, Satu Mare, Baia Mare, Buzau, Bacau and Oradea.

On April 29th 2008 along with the status of its 3G network roll out, Chris Bataillard, CEO of Zapp also announced the decision to use UMTS/HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology for its 2.100 Mhz network as opposed to CDMA 2000.

Commercial services are expected to be available on the new network in early autumn 2008, while network build completion is scheduled for 2011.

The contract to build Zapp's 3G network in Romania was awarded to ZTE. ZTE has been chosen over other potential vendors due to the fact that its solutions deliver the most cost-effective benefits, quality, and functionality. This will lead to higher operational and technological efficiency and will result in cost reduction, while still providing customers with the most advanced 3G services.

The company's 2.100 Mhz network will be fully dedicated to data services and is meant to enhance existing wireless services by improving quality, data speeds and capacity. Once the service is available, customers will be able to download a file or attachment, browse the internet or access e-mail, in a fragment of the time it used to take, given the high speeds data transfer rate of up to 7,2 Mbps.

Zapp at this time provides download data speeds of up to 2,4 Mbps through its EV DO network, and speed are expected to increase to 3,1 Mbps by end of July when Zapp will launch a revolution to its current data technology EV DO Rev A. The EV DO network has a nationwide coverage making broad band services available to more than 10 million people in 60 cities throughout Romania.
